The Havering Food Alliance exists to create a healthier, more sustainable, and equitable food system for the residents of Havering. By bringing together local businesses, community groups, policymakers, and individuals, the alliance works to ensure that everyone—regardless of income or background—has access to nutritious, affordable, and culturally appropriate food. Through education, support initiatives, and advocacy, it aims to tackle food insecurity, improve dietary health, and promote sustainable food production and consumption. By strengthening local food networks and encouraging collaboration, the alliance helps build a resilient food system that benefits both people and the environment.

Beyond access and affordability, the Havering Food Alliance is committed to fostering a strong community food culture. It supports initiatives such as community gardens, food redistribution programs, and local food enterprises, ensuring that food is not only a necessity but a means of bringing people together. By working closely with stakeholders, the alliance also advocates for policies that support fair wages, local food businesses, and environmentally responsible food practices. Ultimately, its goal is to create a future where good food is available to all, promoting both public health and community well-being in Havering.

Who Are We & What Do We Do?

Blackburn with Darwen Food Alliance began in 2018 and whilst operates as an independent charity, works closely with Blackburn with Darwen Public Health, local businesses, organisations and the public to become healthier and more sustainable.

We started off as an evolution the the Food Bank so that when people would come out of crisis, they could be given resources to become self sustainable. Food poverty became the focus during covid and since then we have evolved our workstreams. We cover community skills in cooking/growing, reducing food waste, improving our local supply chains, reducing food poverty, eating wholesome, educating communities and celebrating our diverse food culture. We are a people and partner inspired movement, which means everyone has a place and role for collaborative change.

In 2022, the Food Alliance on behalf of Blackburn with Darwen was awarded The Bronze Award that met the national standards from Sustainable Food Places Network and we are gradually working towards Silver over the next few years.

Each year we work with our members, working groups and funders to develop our 12 month action plan. You can find our action plan for 2024/2025 below (PDF 171KB)
